Vicki Benet

Vicki BenĂȘt - Sing to Me of Love Vicki Benet was known more for singing French on her albums but in this one she sings completely in English. She has a nice voice and does standards. It's a good album for night time. I like her version of The Nearness of you.

Raymond Scott

Raymond Scott - Manhattan Research Inc.: New Plastic Sounds and Electronic Abstractions There are never before commercial recordings from the 50's and the 60's of Raymond Scott. It's neat electronic music, I really like getting into this genre.

Daphne Oram

Daphne Oram - Oramics Spooky electronic music. I think Bruce Haack does it the best though. He has the most fun.

Clothilde

Clothilde - French Swinging Mademoiselle 1967 Interesting French pop of the 60's. I love ye ye music from France around that time, France Gall, Francoise Hardy, and Pussycat were awesome. I wish someone could come up with a collection for Chantal Kelly.

Luiza

Luiza - Luiza Luiza is a nice Brazilian artist from the 60's who released one album. Number 5 is especially fabulous.

Suzanne Ciani

Suzanne Ciani - Lixiviation This is really enjoyable electronic music taken from commercials and the like. I've played this three times this week. If you like Bruce Haack give this a try.

Bonnie Owens All of me belongs to you

Bonnie Owens - All of Me Belongs to You This is a Bakersfield album that reminds me of Jean Shepard, perfect blend of upbeat songs and ballads. Souvenirs and All of me belongs to you are the best, Bonnie Owens is one of the underrated country girl singers of the 60's.

Skeeter Davis

This is one of Skeeter Davis' best albums. It contains The End of the World, Something Precious and Silver Threads and Golden Needles. Her version of Silver Threads is my favorite rendition. It definitely needs to be on cd.

Joni James The Mood is Swinging

This is a joyful album from Joni James. It's upbeat and I love I get a kick out of you and The Lady is a Tramp. Joni James' albums are usually ballads so this is a nice change of pace. Recommended.

Claudine Longet

Claudine Longet had a distinctive whispery voice. It took time to grow on me but I know I own all of her records. The production on her albums especially the A and M records were good. This album focuses on folk and old time tunes. Am I Blue? and Hurry on Down are enjoyable. I think it's gonna rain Today features Randy Newman on piano.

Abbe Lane

I also recommend Where there's a man. Abbe Lane had a brassy voice and a lot of fun on her albums. Check out her rendition of "A Little Girl from Little Rock."

Abbe Lane

Abbe Lane with Tito Puente and His Orchestra - Be Mine Tonight The one time wife of Xavier Cugat made an enjoyable record with Be Mine Tonight. Pan Amore, Y Cha Cha Cha is really fun and Whatever Lola Wants is excellent. The title of her "fictional" book about a singer is called But where is love? The title made me laugh. She was an attractive sex symbol. As for a singer she was impeccable, and unlike many great singers, you could tell she was having a good time too.

Turid

Turid was a Swedish singer-songwriter from the 70's with an exceptional voice, one of the best voices I've heard. The opening number Song is stunning. Sometimes I think Age is a Treasure is good too. She sings well in Swedish and English. Beautiful folk music.

Googoosh

This is an awesome collection of the Iranian pop star of the 70's, The song Nimeyeh Gomshodeyeh Man is extremely catchy. Don't watch the documentary about her as it has horrible editing. She has an amazing voice and there's interesting arrangments.

Nancy Priddy

Christina Applegate's mom made this neat album in the 60's. Christina's World is the best song here, however the whole thing has a nice vibe. I love Epitaph and We could have it all. A psychedelic folk album.

Teal Joy Mood in Mink

Teal Joy sounds like an Oriental Billie Holiday. This second vocal album has nice renditions of But Beautiful, I remember you, and I fall in love too easily. Her first album is easier to find though and better..

Dave Dudley Listen Betty

Dave Dudley sings ballads and uptempo numbers on this good truck driving album. The best numbers are Listen Betty and Six-O-One.

Saturday, July 20, 2013

Molly O'Day

Molly O'Day was a rural country singer. Some of it is gospel. The Tramp on the Street is a particularly moving. The Drunken Driver is a story song, somewhat violent, best song here. This is country music, not pop in the least. Really good stuff.

Teddi King

This is Teddi King's big band period from 1949-1954. I love her album All The King's Songs. Goodbye Mr. Chops and her version of Moonlight in Vermont are pretty.

David Houston's greatest hits

I like the country singer David Houston. Margie Bowes and him were the only good things in the horrible movie Cottonpickin' Chickenpickers. Almost Persuaded is the best song. I like the duet My Elusive Dreams with Tammy Wynette. I wish their album together could be on cd. I also like the joyous Mountain of Love.

Wilma Burgess

This collection of the forgotten 60's country singer Wilma Burgess is good. She had a distinctive torchy voice. Her version of Misty Blue is awesome.

Monday, June 17, 2013

Patti Page Golden Hits of the Boys

Patti Page goes through selections sung by men like Mack the Knife and Don't be Cruel. Her version of Bye Bye Love is cute.

Sunday, June 16, 2013

Syreeta

Stevie Wonder's wife of two years had a distinctive unique voice. The two opening numbers I love everything about you and Black Maybe are neat.

Thursday, June 13, 2013

Emitt Rhodes

I discovered Emitt Rhodes' Mirror in a thrift store in Sun City. He's a talented songwriter who sounds like Paul McCartney. This combines his four albums. The last one frankly isn't that good. But the first three contain many good songs such as She's such a beauty, Mother Earth, and You're a very lovely woman. Also check out his band Merry-Go-Round that he did before going solo.

Edythe Wright

Edythe Wright was Tommy Dorsey's singer. She proved she could swing with Dipsy Doodle and Comin' Through the Rye. Dipsy Doodle was later covered by Beverly Kenney in great effect in her Like Yesterday album. Edythe's ballad Did I remember? is pretty good. This is out of print unfortunately but if you come across it pick it up.

Heaven in my Heart Liz Damon

This album features Liz Damon's Orient Express version of Wave. I've heard many Brazilian versions but this is my favorite of the song. Liz Damon's voice sounds pretty here. Also Quando, Quando, Quando is fun. This is a worthwhile effort from the lounge act from Hawaii.

Jan Howard

This is a collection of Jan Howard's earliest recordings. The One you slip around with is, the hit, is the best here. Skeeter Davis did a good version of it but Jan's better. I've got my pride is good here too.

Jan Howard Evil on your mind

Jan Howard had an ok voice but her song Evil on your Mind is one of my favorite country songs. It's a song about a cheating husband, very catchy. I don't see why people don't put out a collection of this pretty much forgotten country singer.

Rosalia

This was Karina's main competition in the Spanish ye ye scene. Here she does mostly covers but it's pleasant. Chica ye ye the best song is a cover of Conchita Velasco's awesome version. Both are pretty good actually.

Kay Starr I hear the word

I love gospel albums when they're done right, Fern Jones, Martha Carson, and this one. This may be gospel but it's pretty catchy. Jezebel and Rock a my soul are awesome numbers. This is one of Kay Starr's best albums. It's good uplifting music.

Annette Hanshaw

Some people dismiss Annette Hanshaw as a girl who just had a rich daddy to support her hobby. I think she had talent and her music is some of the best the 20's had to offer. Little White Lies is a nice ballad and check out the scatting on Big City Blues. She does an impression of her friend Helen Kane on You wouldn't fool me would you? Helen Kane is more known as the girl who inspired Betty Boop.

Ruth Etting

Ruth Etting mostly made it because of her gangster boyfriend. However she had talent. She had a nice old fashioned voice and she put her heart in the music. For example Ten Cents a Dance and Love me or Leave Me are sung with deep emotion. Doris Day was pretty good in the movie Love me or Leave Me. This is some of the best music the 20's had to offer.

C.K. Strong

Lynn Carey made some strong bluesy gutsy albums. She did this before her Mama Lion albums. All three are recommended. She reminds me of Janis Joplin but she's got her own thing going. I really like her cover of Ain't no Sunshine on the Mama Lion album Preserve Wildlife.

Monday, April 29, 2013

Barbara Keith

An excellent singer-songwriter album from the 70's. The Bramble and the Rose is pretty and her cover of All along the watchtower rocks. It's country, folk, pop, an unique effort.

Jane Fielding

Jane Fielding was 21 years old and she had nice phrasing on these albums. The Right Boy for me is fabulous and so is Key Largo.

Wednesday, January 30, 2013

Sue Raney

This is a swinging jazz album. Nice stuff

Tuesday, January 22, 2013

Felicia Sanders

This combines two albums. I like her torchy voice. I love The Song from Moulin Rouge and Love Affair. She kind of sounds like Beverly Kenney.

Sunday, January 20, 2013

Don Paulin

This is a pretty good bossa nova like album. My favorite number is Sugar Cane.

Thursday, January 17, 2013

Joan Regan

Joan Regan was a British singer from the 50's. Although this has some covers, it's pretty good music from a more innocent era. It's sweet and she has a nice voice.

Monday, January 14, 2013

Kathy Smith 2

This is a folk singer that kind of sounds like Joan Baez. I really like It's taking so long.

Thursday, January 10, 2013

Rhonda Fleming Jane Russell Connie Haines

This is uplifting upbeat gospel music. The first album here features Jane Russell, Rhonda Fleming, Beryl Davis, Della Russell, and Connie Haines. The second just features Beryl, Connie, and Jane. He's got time is a really good number.

Tuesday, January 8, 2013

Martha Carson Satisfied

Martha Carson's album Satisfied is an excellent country gospel album. I really like Satisfied, Ask you shall Receive, and Weighed in the Balance. Her voice kind of sounds like Melba Montgomery which is why I like it.

Wednesday, January 2, 2013

Lucy Ann Polk

This singer kind of sounds like Doris Day. Two jazz albums of her are combined on this cd. I like her version of Makin' Whoopee.
